APIA
Application Programming Interface Association. A standards group defining programming interfaces for the OSI X.400 mail protocol.

ASCII
American Standard Code for Information Interchange. Two standards, define 7-bit and 8-bit characters. The 7-bit ASCII character set is used for standard UNIX mail messages.

Body part
The information sent in a mail message (the message body) can consist of multiple segments, each having a different format (for example, graphics, image, audio). Each segment is referred to as a body part. Each mail message has at least one body part.

elm
A popular interactive, character-mode electronic mail interface. Ishmail's file format and directory naming conventions are compatible with elm.

e-mail
Electronic mail.

GIF
Graphics Interchange Format.

GUI
Graphical User Interface.

ISO
International Standards Organization.

joy stick
A button-like object in a window which allows the user to pan the window viewing area by dragging up, down, left, or right with the mouse.

JPEG
Joint Photographic Experts Group. A group defining standards for photographic image compression.

message body
The information being sent from one person to another in the mail message, as opposed to message routing information contained in the header.

message header
The routing information in a mail message that determines its destination and identifies the sender. Some of this information is supplied by the user and some of it is generated by the system.

MIME
Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions.

mh
A popular UNIX electronic mail interface.

MPEG
Motion Picture Experts Group. A group defining standards for video image compression.

OSI
Open Systems Interconnection. An internationally recognized set of standards for communication between computer systems.

PostScript
A page description language.

sendmail
The standard UNIX implementation of the SMTP protocol.

SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. The mail protocol used with TCP/IP.

URL
Universal Resource Locator. An address on the World Wide Web.

WYSIWYG
"What You See Is What You Get." A description of text editor programs which let you change fonts and formatting, and see the results interactively.

X
A window system for UNIX.

xterm
A character terminal emulation program for the X Window System.
